Supercortemaggiore was a refined petrol marketed by Agip in the fifties and sixties .
The name of the product derives from that of the Piacenza municipality of Cortemaggiore , in whose territory the presence of an oil field was detected in 1949 .
The size of the deposit was modest; however, the discovery, which accompanied that of the Caviaga deposits , had an important symbolic value, as it helped to convince the Italian political world and public opinion that Agip should be "saved", and that the Italy were to pursue an autonomous energy policy.
The Supercortemaggiore therefore had the peculiar characteristic of being the only petrol produced starting from the refining of oil extracted in Italy. To advertise Supercortemaggiore petrol, the famous image of the six-legged dog was chosen , destined to become the logo of ENI and all related companies.
