Norman's Cay became the hub of cocaine transportation from 1978 to 1982 between Columbia and the United States. Think the movie: Blow. Johnny Depp's character interacts with Diego-- which is to portray Lehder. I find it absolutely crazy that Lehder took over the island, even having armed guards and dogs on the beaches... actually on the beach right off of where we were anchored. At one point, if we were to come here an anchor, we would be more than likely killed. In 1980, a boat was found floating away from Norman's Cay- officials apparently found blood stains and corpse inside. A retired couple from Florida apparently didn't realize the danger in getting so close to the island. CRAZY!
As Lehder took over Norman's, it became known as "Lehderland" where debauchery of all types took place. The Bahamian government was supposedly paid off to turn their heads away from the activity, which allowed Carlos to create quite an enterprise. Eventually, the feds caught on and Lehder was busted!
