Privilege Ibiza is the "world's largest nightclub" previously known as Ku Club (1979–95) [1] according to the Guinness Book of Records, with a capacity of 10,000 people. It is located in close proximity to the village of San Rafael, Ibiza, less than one kilometre (0.6 miles) from the nightclub Amnesia. For fourteen years, Privilege hosted Manumission, one of the island's most famous events. After a dispute between the club owner and Manumission's organizers, the event moved to Amnesia.

The history of Privilege began in the early 1970s when it started out as a restaurant, then expanded to include a bar and a community swimming pool. It was then known as Club San Rafael. In 1979, the venue was sold to the “Real Sociedad” footballer José Antonio Santamaría, together with the creative team of Brasilio de Oliviera (founder of La Troya, one of the White Island's longest running nights[2]) and Gorri. The venue then changed its name to KU, after the name of a god from Hawaiian mythology (see Kū). The appeal of the club was such that it commissioned a medium-length film showcasing the many wonders of Ibizan landscapes and nightlife in the mid-eighties.[3]

Throughout the 1980´s, KU Club earned a reputation as Europe's premier nightspot and was compared to an open-air version of the famous Studio 54 in New York. It staged spectacular parties in the main room, which was organized around a swimming pool and a statue of Ku.The place was also where the video to "Barcelona" by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé was filmed on 30 May 1987.[4] It was the witness to early live performances by groups like Spandau Ballet and Kid Creole and the Coconuts.[5] The club featured in a Channel 4 documentary called “A Short Film about chilling”, which labelled KU as “the mirror of Ibiza”.[6] The open-air parties came to an end when legislation forced many of the greater clubs in Ibiza to cover their dancefloors in the early 1990s. Nevertheless, the sheer size of the venue gave rise to the claim of it being the size of an aircraft hangar with a 25-meter high roof.

The club continued with the KU Club name until 1995 before becoming known as Privilege, after a change of ownership to Jose Maria Etxaniz.[7]

also this sentence
His company, the Matutes Group, had taken control back of the club after its original owner Pepe Rosello retired earlier in the year.

its very good structured, to avoid to say, that just a "shaddow-owner" retired from bussiness. :D

Fact is, that Abel Matutes became the owner of different discothecas on ibica,
The KU IBY team would like to thank Don Abel Matutes for giving us the opportunity ...

like KU or like space.
Behind the doors, ppl. say, Abel Matutes tried to avoid the forbes list, to make himself poorer and poorer,
when offshore companies in panama where getting richer and richer. ;)
(the offshore companies investing in Hedge Funds, who are investing in hotelgroups, like starwood.)

Whatever,

the discos and the EDM scene in ibica, is indirectly or directly connected with the Matutes buzz.

Space Ibiza to Reopen, Will Keep “Space” Moniker

according to a recent televised interview with Abel Matutes.

His company, the Matutes Group, had taken control back of the club after its original owner Pepe Rosello retired earlier in the year. “It will surely open this year as Space. It’s an accredited brand” Matutes told interviewers, though he also advised that he and the other heads of Matutes group were also looking into tacking an additional name onto it that closer associates it with other franchises it owns. Matutes reaffirmed that though the club will remain in its same spot without too many changes, it will be converted into a more luxurious club setting – one that caters toward a more exclusive segment of tourism. Though Space will physically remain the same, Matutes’ plans indicate its original essence will be replaced by one that more closely resembles the hierarchical club structures seen in cities such as Las Vegas or Miami. Word remains as to the kind of talent that will be booked in the new Space. Interestingly, the Spanish business magnate also made sure to point out that technically, Space Ibiza has always been Matutes Group property. He reminded viewers that it was indeed his group that built the club, then later passed leadership onto Rosello. At the time, Matutes felt Rosello’s resume made him an ideal candidate for advancing the interests of the company in the area. Rosello’s rental contract ended, but its termination never necessarily spelled the end of the club itself.

Ibiza’s Beloved Pacha Group Is Up For Sale

Timmy KusnierekSeptember 12, 2016
FeaturedNews
Ibiza, the party capital of the world, is receiving quite the shake up this year. After Carl Cox announced his departure from Space, and the famed club announced the end of its own historic 27-year legacy, Pacha Group is now opening the floor for potential buyers.

Pacha is asking €500 million for all of its assets, which includes multiple franchises around the world in addition to the Ibiza headquarters. However, the decision to sell is not based on business, but rather some personal frustration from Pacha’s founder, Ricardo Urgell. Urgell “cannot stomach” the Matutes family, who now own Ibiza’s Ushuaïa, Ushuaïa Tower, Hard Rock Hotel, and will take over the former Space nightclub in 2017.

A source close to Pacha Group made the following statement depicting the reasoning behind the decision:

“Pacha does not believe in this new idea of a rich Ibiza as pushed forwards by Abel Matutes J. The founder cannot go on any more, and his children do not want to bear witness to the future. For this reason they are looking for an investor.”

http://www.youredm.com/2016/09/12/ibiza ... roup-sale/

Ricardo Urgell, founder of the Ibiza-based clubbing conglomerate, confirmed the sale earlier this week.

Pacha Group, the Ibiza-based company behind the world-famous nightclub franchise, has been sold to venture capital firm Trilantic Capital Partners for €350 million.

News of the sale first emerged in October, when Pacha founder Ricardo Urgell told a local newspaper that the deal was "practically done." The figure quoted then was also €350 million. (Pacha's original asking price was €500 million.) Now, three months later, Urgell and representatives from Trilantic have finalised terms. According to Diario De Ibiza, the new owners are a global company with a particularly strong presence in Italy and Spain.

Trilantic will assume control of all of Pacha Group's various ventures around the world, from Ibiza venues Pacha, Destino and Lío to the international franchise that includes clubs in Barcelona, Sydney and Munich. It will also manage Pacha Sitges, the original nightclub opened by Urgell in 1967. In terms of making changes to the way the company is run, Trilantic has said that it plans to increase the amount of staff in Ibiza by a "notable amount."

so,
was senior Urgell also in a silent deal with senior Abel, of having a silent partnership,
and realised a change of balance in ibica ?

whatever,
after the deal, Urgell is safe, and senior Abel can`t do anything against him ?

lets see,
btw,
who is behind Trilantic ? ... investors ...

this party island is creating new places, new sounds and new hipes,
that the project goes on and on :D

the old generation who is keeping halls without life,
are just the housekeepers of ghostplaces,
while the party goes on, on new places, with new DJs and new owners.

Carl Cox was great, hope he find a cool place, when he stays in ibica.
